CivicNetZero today announces that Freetown, Sierra Leone has joined as the second pilot city on its platform, continuing early progress in working with cities to accelerate climate action.

Cities are responsible for more than two-thirds of global energy use and over 70% of emissions, yet many face challenges in turning climate ambition into investable, deliverable projects. CivicNetZero has been developed to address this gap — connecting cities, capital and delivery capability to accelerate progress from strategy to delivery.

Freetown joins as an early mover, working in partnership with CivicNetZero to progress priority initiatives across urban transport, climate resilience and nature-based solutions.

These include improving safe and accessible transport, strengthening flood and landslide resilience, and continuing to scale urban greening and reforestation to protect communities and improve living conditions.

“In Freetown, our focus is on practical actions that improve everyday life for our residents — whether that’s safer mobility, better protection from flooding, or expanding green spaces across the city. Partnering with CivicNetZero gives us an opportunity to strengthen how we develop and structure these initiatives, and to connect with the investment and expertise needed to deliver them at pace.”

Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr , Mayor of Freetown

“Freetown has demonstrated what focused, city-led climate action looks like grounded in the realities communities face. This is exactly the type of leadership needed to move from ambition to delivery, particularly across areas like transport and resilience.”

Lord Marvin Rees OBE , Chair and Co-founder of CivicNetZero

“We are excited to be working with Freetown as our second city. There is a clear set of priorities, from transport through to resilience and nature-based solutions, and our focus is on helping structure these into investable opportunities and connecting the right partners to support delivery.”

Mark Apsey MBE , CEO of CivicNetZero

During the pilot, CivicNetZero will work closely with Freetown to identify and structure project opportunities, enhance investment readiness, and facilitate connections with aligned capital providers and delivery partners.

The pilot is designed to demonstrate how a more coordinated, data-driven approach can help cities accelerate from climate ambition to real-world delivery.
